When the time inevitably came, I knew that I needed to delete these photos. I had avoided checking my camera roll ever since that day. and it's a bizarre one, isn't it? It was only three months ago that I broke up with my ex and deleting her photos was my equivalent to deleting memories. If I do take a photo, my memory only extends to what happened before and after, never to anything extraneous. I'll subconsciously know that moment in time existed, my brain will replay little sound bytes of birds chirping or water splashing but everything else is a black void of nothingness. It's almost comical how bad my visual memory is.

Whenever I'm dragged to a dumb place or forced to go somewhere, I abstain from photography and, usually, I quickly forget that it ever happened. I often scroll through my camera roll to vicariously (and unashamedly) relive my favorite moments. I take way too many photos as a result of this and they form this kaleidoscope in my head. However, for the life of me, I can't remember what things look like. I can recall sounds like a tape recorder. I can manufacture an image out of thin air. Hopefully I can safely tell everyone this without ridicule but I have a pretty bad visual memory. Eternal Sunshine occupies a very special place in my heart, and not for the reason you may think. I tend to invest a lot of emotional energy and I've formed very personal connections to some of my most favorites.

The closer a filmmaker comes to capturing a certain euphoria, melancholia, or just mundanity, the closer I attach myself to the art. Film has become my therapy, my escape from the outside world. With every coming year, I grow more appreciative of the ideas that artists can communicate.
